§ 22-494. Beepers and telephone paging devices.

  • (a)

    Prohibited activities. Purchase or possession of beepers and telephone devices by minors:

    (1)

    As used in this section, the term "beeper" or "telephone paging device" means a unit, instrument or electronic gadget that displays telephone numbers or messages received through telephone calls or dialing, including items commonly known as "pagers."

    (2)

    Except as otherwise provided, a person under 18 years of age shall not buy or possess a beeper or telephone paging device.

    (3)

    Except as otherwise provided, a person shall not sell or give a beeper or telephone paging device to another person under 18 years of age.

    (b)

    Exemptions.

    (1)

    This section does not apply to a person under 18 years of age who exhibits to the police or person providing the beeper or telephone paging device the written consent of his employer, if the writing indicates that the beeper or telephone paging device is being carried and used by the juvenile in the course of his employment. For the purposes of this section, the term "employer" shall be an entity duly registered, licensed or otherwise incorporated to do business in this city, the county or state.

    (2)

    This section does not apply to a person under 18 years of age who exhibits to the police or person providing the beeper or telephone paging device the written consent of his parent or guardian, if the writing indicates that the beeper or telephone paging device is being carried and used by the juvenile with the approval of the parent or guardian.
